Gazing up into space

Rakete aus Klemmbausteinen

AS A CHILD, did you also try to recreate the universe in your room, carefully constructing it one piece at a time with those famous little bricks? The model brings back memories of a time when space was a limitless playground for our imagination.

What springs to mind when we gaze up into space has radically changed, however. Space these days is a highly political domain, as security expert and DAAD alumnus Dr Enrico Fels explains in his guest article for this edition of the Letter. Whoever has influence in space can also dictate the rules of the game on Earth.

Let us introduce you in this edition to some fascinating alumnae and alumni for whom outer space is the ultimate objective – be it because they are studying plants that could help astronauts stay healthier in space, because they are developing innovative technology for moon missions or because they are searching for extraterrestrial life. We hope you enjoy discovering all the amazing stories in this edition! —

Getting involved with DAAD Alumni & Friends

Are you based in Germany – and keen to foster exchange or even make a difference as a volunteer? Then perhaps you’ll be interested in getting involved with DAAD Alumni & Friends. The 30 or so Regional Groups are all about diversity, with active members – for the most part DAAD alumnae and alumni from all kinds of different ethnic backgrounds and generations – organising local events in university cities. City visits, trips to museums, hiking and other excursions, academic meetings, games nights and regular pub sessions: anything goes that helps international DAAD scholarship holders who have newly arrived to get settled into life in Germany. As a member, you will support the association’s activities through your membership fee, and will also have the chance to get involved yourself.

In the DAAD’s anniversary year, the Regional Groups across Germany got together by taking part in a kind of relay. Whatch this video to see what happened.
